Sandcastle Shelter News

Personnel changes: On January 1, Judy Hanish officially returned to Citizens Concerned for the Homeless as the Executive Director. Tom Isakson and his family have moved to Arizona. In addition to Judy, the shelter has two new employees, Theresa Morris, and Christina Robinson, resident technicians. They round out our other experienced staff employees: Barb Nichols, Gladys Hicks, and Debbie Bonds.

Shelter activities: Thanks to a generous community the holidays were joyful and toys were plentiful. During December and January the shelter, with the help of Housing Opportunities and the Michigan City Housing Authority were able to find housing for six of our families and, 83% of our residents were able to find employment. With the opening of the Grace Learning Center (GLC), we now require all shelter residents to attend Budgeting and Banking classes, provided by PNC Bank.

Needs fulfilled and outstanding: The Michigan City Exchange Club fulfilled a shelter holiday wish on February 1st, by delivering over 500 rolls of toilet paper. At this time of year, the shelter is always in need of blankets, and comforters. When our residents leave the shelter we always provide them with their bedding, in addition to donated kitchen equipment and a food basket.
